About the Project

About the Project

The project being studied is located along the north edge of St. Charles, approximately halfway between the river bridges in St. Charles and the bridge in South Elgin.  The study will determine if building a two lane bridge over the Fox River between Route 31 and Route 25 will help solve some local problems including:

  • Help to relieve traffic through downtown St. Charles
  • Improve response times for emergency vehicles north of St. Charles
  • Help to link neighborhoods on the east and west sides of the river
  • Give residents another way to cross the river to get to schools, shopping, natural recreational areas, or work

The proposed project is a two-lane road and bridge that will extend Red Gate Road across the river to Route 25 near Little Woods School.  It will include a bike trail from St. Charles North High School across the river to connect with the Fox River Trail near Pinelands Drive. The cost of building the bridge and roadway is estimated to be between twenty-five million and thirty million dollars.  To date, only the engineering has been funded, the cost of construction has not yet been funded.
